Corruption and climate change are both global issues that have wide-reaching impacts on societies. Communities active in climate change and anti-corruption efforts have now come together to provide common solutions to prevent corruption in climate projects. This collaboration is essential to ensure that corruption does not undermine the global response to climate change and that vulnerable communities are not deprived of resources such as carbon offset projects and climate mitigation funds.
The risks of corruption in the climate sector are similar to other areas of governance, but the climate transition brings new risks such as regulatory abuses and negative impacts on emerging markets. The World Bank supports strengthening institutions and accountability in climate projects with diagnostic tools and monitoring programs, while also supporting judicial and audit institutions worldwide.
To achieve meaningful change, global cooperation and the formation of strategic alliances between governments, civil society, and the private sector are essential. The climate crisis requires urgent and collective action against corruption, and through these collaborations, we can ensure that climate efforts are not undermined by corruption and that a sustainable future is achieved for all.
